WORLD WAR Z

An Oral History of the Zombie War

by Max Brooks

“Two hundred million zombies. Who can even visualize that type of number, let alone combat it? They had no limits of endurance. They would never negotiate, never surrender.
Every single one of them, every second of every day, was devoted to consuming all life on Earth.” —General Travis D’Ambrosia

SUSPENDED SENTENCES

by Patrick Modiano

This story revolves around two young boys, the narrator and his younger brother, who come to live with a family friend in a Paris suburb after their mother, an actress, “had gone on the road for a play.”

In “Suspended Sentences,” Modiano re-creates a period in his childhood when he and his younger brother were cared for by a kindly and loveable gang of criminals.

YOU'RE UGLY. TOO
Short Stories for English Language Learners
by Lorrie Moore

“Are you seeing anyone?” said Evan. “I’m asking for a particular reason, I’m not just being like mom.”

“I’m seeing my house. I’m tending to it when it wets, when it cries, when it throws up.” Zoë had bought a mint green house near campus, though now she was thinking that she shouldn’t have. It was hard to live in a house. She kept wandering in and out of rooms, wondering where she had put things.
