The Plot Against America
Narrated by Ron Silver
A Novel by Philip Roth
ESL English Listening :: Adult Literacy

The Plot Against America imagines "an alternate American history told through the eyes of a working-class Jewish family in Newark, New Jersey, as they watch the political rise of ... the isolationist and populist, Charles Lindbergh, who becomes president and turns the nation toward fascism."
In a nationwide radio address, Lindbergh publicly blames the Jews for pushing America toward a pointless war with Nazi Germany, and upon taking office as president of the United States, he negotiates a cordial “understanding” with Adolf Hitler.
Pulitzer Prize–winner Philip Roth recounts what it is like for his Newark family — and for a million such families all over the country — during the menacing years of the Lindbergh presidency, when American citizens who happened to be Jews had every reason to expect the worst.

Philip Roth's writings include the novella "Goodbye Columbus" which is also posted on this website.
